SOFT ARCHITECTURE (2024)

Soft Architecture is an immersive installation that critiques the modern prioritization of form over function and the relentless emphasis on technological progress and expansion, often at the expense of human needs. Created using TouchDesigner and Ableton, this work reflects the tension created by the constant need to readapt to external forces and the resulting rupture of physical, social, and emotional structures. Like the soft architectural structures of the human body, which expand and contract with tension, the work asks whether we are building appropriate external structures in which to thrive or causing undue harm in the frenzy of reorientation and adaptation to the changing pressures of modernity.

The visual design of Soft Architecture features parametric architectural structures that evoke the organic qualities of human fascia, the connective tissue that envelops muscles, bones, organs, nerves, and blood vessels, binding them together. This tissue plays a critical role in supporting and protecting the body’s structure while facilitating movement. Additionally, fascia responds to emotions and environmental factors, contracting under stress. Similarly, the structures in this installation react to a soundscape designed to evoke tension and unpredictability.
